Xbox Live Accounts Being Hacked?
A problem that’s only come about recently is the stealing of Xbox Live accounts. It has not been a problem until recently – and is still pretty contained – i’m sure more than a few gamers are interested in knowing a bit more about it before it becomes .
Kevin Finisterre, a security researcher at Digital Munition, raised the issue on the Full Disclosure mailing list over the weekend, calling attention to rumors that Microsoft’s Bungie.net was the victim of a breach that exposed a portion of Xbox Live.
“Some folks are having their Microsoft points stolen and or points purchased via their stolen gamer tag,” Finisterre said.
A quick search of user forums at xbox.com and other gaming sites turned up multiple messages from Xbox Live users complaining about hijacked accounts, which typically link gamer tags to Windows Live ID (formerly .NET Passport).
While it’s surprising, it was bound to happen eventually. Fortunately, Microsoft is a fairly large company. As long as they go about resolving this situation correctly, they won’t lose any respect in the gaming community. If they go about this incorrectly, though, they could very well lose a bit of momentum in the area where they have it most.
I’m not worried about it, though, so expect a good outcome.
