My Xbox 360's Ring of Death…

My roommate bought Lost Planet Sunday. When he started it up, his 360 bit the dust.

Thinking that it was just his 360, my other roommate wants to play it on mine. I’m cool with that – why not?

It boots up fine, but freezes during a cinematic. Reboot. Freezes at the Now Loading screen. That’s cool, freezes happen every now and then, right? Reboot. This time it freezes during the 360 animation… And that’s when it happened.

The dreaded “Ring of Death”.

I call 1-800-4-MY-XBOX, and luckily, it’s under the extended warranty because it’s a launch system. I sent it to be shipped out yesterday, and hope to get it back soon…

I’m starting to miss it already, so here’s hoping it gets back soon. My roommate has picked up a new copy of Lost Planet just in case!

Now this isn’t the most isolated of incidents, as games and updates have bricked Xbox 360s before, but if I were you I wouldn’t be too afraid about dying 360s as of yet. My 360 was one of the launch consoles, so i’m not too upset by it. I’ve enjoyed a bit over a year with my 360, and since the warranty has been extended, all I have to worry about is a 7-10 day wait to get it back.

A good question to ask, though, is whether Capcom is aware that the games it ships are slowly killing off Xbox 360s? It happened with both Dead Rising and Lost Planet, so is it isolated? Does Capcom secretly have it out against Xbox 360 owners?

I wouldn’t bank on it. Capcom’s sales on Xbox 360 have been brisk, as Dead Rising recently hit over one million copies sold in the US, and Lost Planet is looking to match that. If I hear anything edgewise, you’ll be the first to know.

If, on the other hand, you ARE worried about this happening to your Xbox 360, check out The Red Ring of Death from It’s an article about both what to look for if you think your Xbox 360 might be prepping to fail and their own Xbox 360 “Ring of Death”.

Any way it goes, my 360 will be gone for the time being. I’ll keep you informed of any updates!
