Superman Returns: Review (Xbox 360)

Story
After watching the film, you might expect Superman Returns to have a lot in common, right? Not so - DC Comics and EA created villains specifically for the game. To be honest, the most you’ll see from the movie is in the cutscenes. Everything else is based solely on the stories from the comics. Mxyzptlk, Metallo, and Bizarro all make appearances. Mxyzptlk places mini-games all over Metropolis, and Bizarro happens to be a part of one of them that involves destroying as much of Metropolis as possible.
The story in Superman Returns is told in chapters, and in between chapters, you get smaller tasks to complete. This brings us to one of the biggest letdowns of the game: repetition, repetition, repetition.
Do you like fighting robots? You might want to get used to it, because you’ll do a LOT of it. In between major chapters of the story, the downtime is filled with tasks like putting out fires, averting disasters, and fighting various enemies, but you’ll see more robots than you might care to in that time frame.
Conclusion
While I love having the control of Supes that he deserves, there are minor things that knock Superman Returns from being as good a game as it could have been. The repetition between chapters and lack of variety in the random missions didn’t help much, and it isn’t as long a game as you’d expect for $60.
The potential is there for a blockbuster Superman game, and while this one isn’t as bad as it’s made out to be, it isn’t quite blockbuster material. I have a lot of respect for the Tiburon studio, and considering this is their first non-sports title I have high hopes for their next outing.
Superman Returns: The Videogame is the best Superman game i’ve played to date, of that there’s no doubt. I’m also sure that just about anyone who plays this game for any period of time will find something they like about it, but I honestly can’t recommend it for purchase to anyone outside of die-hard Superman fans. If you’re not a Superman fan, though, I’d suggest at least a rent.
